Established 1986 • Isle of Harris
Dedicated to the conservation, protection and scientific study of places of natural beauty, ornithological wonder, and ecological significance in the Outer Hebrides.
Our Story
Founded in 1986, the James Rice Memorial Trust stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving the extraordinary natural heritage of the Outer Hebrides. Our work encompasses the protection of sites of ornithological, entomological, archaeological, botanical, zoological, and scientific interest.
From the puffin colonies that grace our coastal cliffs to the ancient archaeological mysteries embedded in our landscape, we work tirelessly to ensure these treasures endure for future generations. Our trust operates across the Western Isles, with deep roots in the Isle of Harris.
We believe that conservation goes beyond protection—it requires education, research, and community engagement. Through our programmes, we strive to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and empower local communities to become stewards of their environment.

What We Do
Our work spans multiple disciplines, each contributing to the preservation of the Hebridean ecosystem and its unique heritage.
Protecting seabird colonies, monitoring puffins, guillemots, and other species that inhabit our dramatic coastline. We conduct annual surveys and work to preserve nesting habitats.
Studying and protecting the diverse insect populations of the Hebrides, from rare moths to crucial pollinators that sustain our unique botanical ecosystems.
Preserving ancient sites, standing stones, and archaeological treasures that tell the story of human habitation in the Hebrides spanning millennia.
Protecting rare plant species, machair meadows, and the unique vegetation that thrives in our Atlantic climate and mineral-poor soils.
Studying and protecting terrestrial and marine wildlife, from otters and seals to the diverse marine life in our surrounding waters.
Conducting scientific research and publishing findings. We educate communities about conservation principles and the importance of preserving natural heritage.
"The moors are the soul of Scotland—
wild, untamed, and precious."
